Why I Built Ya Leo!

When my son Luca turned 4, I wanted to teach him to read in Spanish. I searched everywhere — the App Store, recommendations from other parents, educational sites — and I couldn't find a single app that taught reading in Spanish the right way. There were plenty of apps to learn Spanish as a second language — but nothing for kids who already speak it and just need to learn to read. Everything was either in English, poorly translated, or didn't follow the método silábico that millions of children across Latin America learn with. So I decided to build it myself. Ya Leo! is the app I wish existed for Luca. Every lesson, every book, every detail was designed by a parent who simply wanted his child to read in Spanish.

Questions parents ask

Is Ya Leo an app to learn Spanish?

No. Ya Leo is a reading app for children who already speak or understand Spanish. It teaches them to read it — letters, syllables, words and stories — using the método silábico taught in schools across Latin America.

What age is Ya Leo for?

Ages 3 and up. An adaptive placement test starts every child at the right level, whether they’re learning their first vowels or already reading syllables.

What is the método silábico?

It’s the syllabic method used to teach reading in Spanish across Latin America. Children learn the vowels, then join consonants and vowels into syllables (ma, me, mi, mo, mu), then join syllables into words (ma-má, lu-na). Spanish is written the way it sounds, so this is a fast, reliable path to reading.

How can I teach my child to read in Spanish at home?

A few minutes a day is enough. Read aloud together, play with sounds (clap out the syllables of words), learn the vowels, then simple syllables like ma, pa, la and sa, and build first words with them. Ya Leo follows that same order, step by step.

My child reads in English at school. Will Ya Leo help them read in Spanish?

Yes — Ya Leo was built for bilingual families. It teaches the letters and sounds that work differently in Spanish, like the vowels, ll, ñ and rr. Bilingual mode gives instructions in English while your child reads in Spanish.

How does Leo, the AI tutor, work?

When it’s your child’s turn to read, the app listens and follows along word by word, with gentle help when they need it. After each book, Leo chats with your child about the story to build understanding and vocabulary.

How much does Ya Leo cost?

Ya Leo is free to download and start, with a limited set of lessons and books. Premium unlocks the full curriculum, all books, AI tutoring, daily warm-ups and up to 3 reader profiles. In the US, Premium is $9.99/month or $59.99/year.

Which devices does Ya Leo work on?

iPhone and iPad from the App Store, and Android phones and tablets from Google Play.

Is Ya Leo safe for my child?

Yes. The app has no ads and no tracking. The parent area is locked, and your child’s data stays private.
